-
- First products designed for PCs and compatibles enable
- Macintosh to PC communication over AppleTalk networks
-
- EMERYVILLE, Calif.—March 25,1990—In a continuing effort to promote AppleTalk as
- a cross-platform local area networking (LAN) standard, Farallon Computing today
- shipped its PhoneNET Talk™ software and PhoneNET® Card PC for LocalTalk. The
- products are the first Farallon products designed specifically for IBM personal
- computers (PCs) and compatibles. The software and the networking card bundle
- are part of the Farallon PhoneNET System, a complete line of unshielded
- twisted-pair (UTP) networking products for AppleTalk networking.
-
- PhoneNET Talk software enables PCs running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows 3.0
- access AppleTalk network resources such as printers, file servers, and network
- applications such as electronic mail. PhoneNET Talk software is network
- speed-independent. It runs the AppleTalk protocol over 10 Mbps Ethernet, 4
- Mbps Token Ring, and 230.4 kbps LocalTalk networking media. PhoneNET Card PC
- for LocalTalk is a bundled package of everything a customer needs to attach a
- PC to a PhoneNET LocalTalk network: PhoneNET Talk software, a LocalTalk card
- for ISA bus computers (up to 25 MHz), and a PhoneNET Connector for easy
- connection to a PhoneNET network.
-
- The products are the first to emerge from Farallon’s recent technology
- agreement with Apple Computer that grants Farallon rights to develop, market,
- and sublicense the AppleTalk protocol. Currently, there are over 300,000
- networked PCs running AppleTalk. PhoneNET Talk software, formerly AppleShare
- PC, and the PhoneNET Card PC for LocalTalk, formerly LocalTalk PC Card, are
- available exclusively through Farallon’s worldwide distribution channels.
